The British Carbon Group is a special interest group of the Royal Society of Chemistry , the Institute of Physics and the Society of Chemical Industry devoted to the advancement of carbon science. It is also a member of the European Carbon Association.
The Carbon Group was originally formed in 1965 as a Subject Group of The Institute of Physics. In 1977 the Group became the Joint Carbon Group of The Institute of Physics and the Royal Society of Chemistry. Since January 1994 the Group has been joined with the Industrial Carbon and Graphite Group of The Society of Chemical Industry and is known as The British Carbon Group. In addition to physicists and chemists, the Group welcomes professional members from other disciplines with an interest in carbon and is attracting interest from scientists working in Europe and the developing countries.

The British Carbon Group has funds available to assist student travel for participation in national and international meetings relating to the science and technology of carbon materials.
Preference will be given to students who are:
The application form is available as a pdf file or a Word document. Applications should be accompanied by a letter from the students supervisor or Head of Department supporting the application and specifying to whom any cheque should be made payable.
Please note that applications are for travel funds only, not for conference fees or accomodation. Sums awarded are normally up to 75GBP for a UK conference and up to 200GBP for international conferenes. Cheques will only be issued after the conference has taken place and on receipt of the short article mentioned above.
Application Form (pdf)
Application Form (word).
This annual award was established in 1996 in memory of Brian Kelly, a leading authority on graphite physics.
The award is intended as a travel grant for students or young researchers under the age of 35 to attend the annual international carbon conference. Anyone living or working, at the time of that conference, in the country where the conference is held is not eligible. As a consequence, applications will not be accepted from the US on this occasion.
The award is made upon the basis of an appraisal of the extended abstract or paper submitted to the conference organisers, together with a short CV and commentary provided normally by the candidate's supervisor or close colleague. However, self-nomination is permitted. A committee of British Carbon Group officers will choose the successful applicant.
The closing date for applications for C2007 will be 22nd April 2007.
The award is (currently) one thousand dollars ($1000) and is presented at the time of the conference. It is a condition of the award that the winner attends the conference and presents his or her paper either orally or as a poster.
Applications may be transferred electronically to the Chairman of The British Carbon Group, Prof. Malcolm Heggie, at m.i.heggie@sussex.ac.uk or mailed to him at the following address:

Membership of The British Carbon Group is open to all those with an interest in any aspect of carbon and carbonaceous materials. Those who already are Members, Associates or Fellows of one of our sponsoring bodies (The Royal Society of Chemistry, The Institute of Physics or The Society of Chemical Industry) can automatically become members of The British Carbon Group by ticking the appropriate "box" on their annual membership renewal form, and paying a small additional fee with their subscription to cover postages etc. At present, Members of The Society of Chemical Industry need to pay that fee to us directly, but we hope that this anomaly will shortly be removed.
Others may join as Subscribing Members on payment of an annual fee which is currently £10.
Further details may be obtained from The Honorary Treasurer, Dr. A. J. Wickham
All Members receive an occasional Carbon Newsletter (approximately twice per year) and also receive reduced fees for all scientific meetings sponsored or co-sponsored by the Group. There is no specific student membership, but bona fide students may apply for bursaries to assist their attendance at conferences both in the UK and overseas.
