Bursaries, Awards and Travel Grants

Awards and Prizes

Bursaries, Travel Grants

A number of organisations can be approached to seek funding for a short-term research visit to the UK or direct funding to attend a conference in the UK. Please note that those schemes which do not provide funding for attending a conference will nevertheless help you to cover international travel expenses to get to the UK.

Please also note that unfortunately INTAS has terminated its Conference Grants Programmes are cancelled in 2006. Therefore, there will be no applications for CIGs and COGs.

British Carbon Group Travel Bursaries

UK students and / or BCG members may be eligible for British Carbon Group travel bursaries towards their travel expenses. A condition of acceptance is that the student must write a short piece for the British Carbon Group newsletter, either on the subject of their research area or the conference for which the award is given. Further details are available from the link on the British Carbon Group Website.

The Royal Society

Short visits - although they do not directly fund participation in conferences, they pay for international travel expenses if you were successful in getting a Short Visit to the UK grant. Available to scientists of at least postdoctoral level, and there is no age limit. The next deadline is 1 March, please check eligibility by country.

National Science Foundation

For researchers working in the US.

The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation

The Leverhulme Trust

Visits by foreign scholars to the UK.

British Council

Travel / conference grants.

The Royal Society of Chemistry

There is lots useful information from the Royal Society of chemistry, for example they have a Student Bursary scheme.

Royal Society of Chemistry Student Bursary Scheme

A limited number of bursaries are available to student members of the RSC and other RSC members in the early stages of their career (typically within 5 years of completing a first or postgraduate degree) who do not have support available from their employer or research grant to attend major RSC conferences. These bursaries are only for centrally organised RSC Conferences.

Applicants must complete and return the attached RSC Bursary Application form to the RSC Conferences Department at the time of registering to attend an RSC conference. Alternatively applicants can complete the bursary section of a conference's pdf registration form, downloadable from the Application and Fees pages of the website of any major RSC conference.

Application forms must be received by the early bird deadline date for conference registration (usually two months prior to the meeting, but this may vary).

The bursary award in 2005 was £150 per recipient per conference, and funding is supplied from the RSC Travel Grant Scheme. Additional funds may also be available for specific conferences. See conference websites for details.

Applicants should be RSC members at the time of the meeting they will be attending and for which the travel bursary is being given.

All enquiries on bursary applications should be directed to RSC Conferences.

Journals Grants for International Authors

Funding is available to RSC authors for travel to other countries. The grants of up to £2000 cover travel and subsistence (but not research-related costs) and are available for one or both of the following objectives:
  • to collaborate actively in research
  • to give or receive special expertise and training.
The funding from these grants comes from the cash surplus generated by RSC publications. The RSC's publishing business is distinguished from commercial publishers in that the surplus generated is used to promote and support chemistry, mainly in the UK. Recognising that the majority of authors and subscribers who support RSC journals are from outside the UK, RSC Council makes some of this surplus available to both UK and international authors in the form of travel grants.

If you are aware of other award and bursary schemes which you think would be of interest to potential attendees, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will add them here.
