News

'Carbon in Health, the Environment and Energy' is a 2 day meeting that aims to create a strong multi-disciplinary discussion centred around carbon science. The prominence of carbon science in today's society is immense especially with issues such as global warming and environmental emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels. Nevertheless, many of the solutions rest with advancing our understanding of carbon science, development of new carbon materials such as nanocarbons and how these might have an effect upon the health of the population and the wider environment. This meeting provides an excellent opportunity for cross fertilization of ideas and knowledge from many fields with a strong interest in carbon science.

Who Should Attend

The subject of this meeting is considered of high relevance to all those working with carbon materials including policy makers, consultancy and advanced materials manufacturing companies, university departments and students. Registration fee £175 and £155 (for students/members). Fee includes abstract book, lunches, conference dinner and all refreshments.

Speakers include:

Silvana Fiorito, University La Sapienza-CNR, Rome, Italy
"Carbon Nanotube Biocompatibility: Interactions between Carbon Nanotubes and Human Cells"

Malcolm Grimston, Chatham House, Imperial College, London
"The Role of Carbon in Energy: Saviour or Sinner?"

Peter Hall, University of Strathclyde
"The Future for Transport is Black: How Carbon will Deliver Carbon-Free Solutions"

Colin Snape, University of Nottingham
"Recent developments in apportioning carbon particulates and PAHs from coal utilisation and assessing their health effects"

Bernd Eggen, The Met. Office
"Carbon Cycle Feedbacks in the climate system"

Mhairi Gass, SuperSTEM
"Visualisation of Carbon Nanostructures"

Steve Eichhorn, University of Manchester
"Green Composites"

Tony Wickham, British Carbon Group
"Misadventures, Misunderstandings and Mysteries in the Nuclear Graphite Lifecycle"

Timings and Social Programme
